How do I prepare for this career?

There are over two hundred universities nationwide with ABET accredited Civil Engineering programs. The State of Illinois has seven universities with programs certified by ABET that offer a degree in Civil Engineering, which are as follows:

  • Bradley University, Peoria
  • Southern Illinois University, Carbondale
  • Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago
  • Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville
  • Northwestern University, Chicago
  • University of Illinois, Chicago
  • University of Illinois, Urbana/Champaign

Interested high school students should have completed four years of coursework in English, three and a half years in Mathematics, two years in Social Studies, three years in Lab Science and two years of electives before applying to one of the seven universities. ACT/SAT score and GPA requirements vary from one university to another. For a more detailed requirement list from a specific university, students should contact their guidance counselor.

Courses to Consider
If you want to start preparing for college, make sure you're studying the subjects that will help you succeed in college work and prepare you for engineering study. Recommended high school courses include:

Math (Four Years): Algebra I and II, Geometry, Trigonometry, Calculus.

Science (Four Years): Biology, Physics, Chemistry (Other science options for the fourth-year requirement and electives include advanced levels of Biology, Chemistry, Physics, or Ecology, Astronomy, and Earth Sciences).

Language Arts (Four Years): English (Elective courses in this area include Speech/Debate, Communications/Media, and Journalism).

Foreign Language (Three Years): Your choice, based on what your school offers.
